Why did the Republican folks insist that there was no global warming inspite of scienctific proof in the 70's?

Ice caps melting....change in weather...even if they don't believe humans are messing up the ozone, my gosh, the increasing spike in heat year after year, much less polluted orange cloudy skies should tell them something, right? Those liberal scientists..always joking around, huh?
