What are power outlets over doorways for in older homes?

I have a house built in 1949 and there is an outlet over the doorway in the kitchen. I"ve seen these in other houses as well. What is the intended use for these outlets? I was thinking clock but it's recessed into the wall and it would have to be a very very small clock to fit between the ceiling and the door jam.
