What cultural factors in the U.S. might contribute to a woman's negative experience of menopause? How?

I hope M2M is kidding, but there are people who feel like toward post-menopausal women. How could that attitude not affect you? And the depicition of post-menopausal women in film and other media doesn't help. I think society believes men become more distinguished as they age and women don't. Hence the disproportionate spending by women to look younger.
