Why do Bun Foo and Ching Ho from Thoroughly Modern Millie speak Cantonese and sing in Mandarin Chinese?

stupidity? i speak both cantonese and mandarin and the languages are very different... PS- i'm in pit orchestra for MY school's production of thoroughly modern milly!... go alto saxes...
